Depending on the Fare types, passengers are entitled to bring 1 handbag 08kg/17lbs or 1 handbag 10kg/22lbs (Morabeza Light and Morabeza Flex) and 1 or 2 checked bags (23kg/50lbs each) with an exception of the Economy Light fare type in which only one handbag (08kg/17lbs) is allowed.  

If the weight is more than that, it will be considered as excess baggage and fees will apply.

Excess baggage fees of 15 EUR / 20 USD per kg will apply to any checked bag if the weight is over 23kg/50lbs. 

On domestic flights, Excess baggage fees of 400 CVE / 5€ per Kg will apply

Please be aware that according to The International Air Transport Association (IATA) rules the maximum allowed weight of one checked bag is 32kg / 70lbs. Checked baggage which exceeds 32kg / 70lbs won’t be accepted. 

Baggage carried in the cabin, free of charge, which you are fully responsible for.

If these limits are exceeded, the luggage will be dispatched as hold luggage and subject to the application of the extra piece charge.

Hand Baggage is all items that can be accommodated in the appropriate compartment (under the seat in front of you, or in the overhead compartment) with dimensions 55 in height x 35 cm length x 25 wide and a maximum weight of 08Kg.

Each passenger is allowed to carry alcohol-based hand sanitizer in the cabin up to a maximum limit of 100ml.

The number of items you can carry for free in the cabin depends on the fare type:

Economy Light, Economy Plus, Economy Flex  – 1 piece of hand baggage up to 08kg/17lbs. 

Morabeza Light, Morabeza Flex – 1 piece of hand baggage up to 10kg/22lbs.

All domestic flight fares are entitled to 06kg;

Babies

Passengers are allowed to carry, for the baby (aged 0 to 23 months) traveling with them, a portable stroller, bassinet, or a baby seat, in addition to the baby food necessary for the flight which will be collected at the boarding gate.

Items carried free of charge

In addition to the carry-on baggage allowance, one of the following items may be carried free of charge provided that the combined weight of the items and the weight of the carry-on bag must not exceed 08kg:

  • A coat, an overcoat, or a blanket;
  • An umbrella or cane;
  • A briefcase or lady’s handbag;
  • Books and magazines in reasonable quantity for reading during the flight;
  • A camera or video recorder or binoculars;
  • Baby food for the flight;
  • Walking aids such as portable wheelchair/a pair of crutches or orthopedic equipment or prosthesis, if the passenger depends on them;
  • Medical devices: upon prescription/prior approval;
  • Duty Free Shop Bag: A bag with up to 2 bottles of alcoholic beverages, or other items.

Items prohibited as/in hand luggage    

For security reasons, it is prohibited to carry certain items as/in hand luggage:

1.Prohibited Items in carry-on luggage: Pistols, firearms and other devices that fire projectiles – devices that can or appear to be used to cause serious injury by firing a projectile, including:

  • Firearms of any kind, such as pistols, revolvers, shotguns, shotguns;
  • Toy weapons, replicas or imitations of firearms that can be confused with real weapons;
  • Lighters as a form of firearm;
  • Firearm components, excluding telescopic sights;
  • Air pressure and CO2 weapons, such as pistols, pellet guns, shotguns and skewer weapons;
  • Alarm pistols;
  • Nail gun and nail gun, industrial;
  • Crossbows, bows and arrows;
  • Slings and slings;
  • Underwater hunting weapons.

2. Neutralizing devices – devices specifically designed to stun or immobilize, including:

  • Electroshock devices such as electric stun guns, electric dart guns (tasers) and electric sticks;
  • Cattle slaughter guns or devices;
  • Neutralizing or incapacitating chemicals, gases and aerosols such as mace, pepper spray, tear gas, acid gas and animal repellent aerosols.

3. Pointed weapons and sharp objects – objects that, due to their sharp point or their sharp edges, can be used to cause serious injury, including:

  • Axes;
  • Arrows and darts;
  • Harpoons and arrows;
  • Ice picks;
  • Ice skates;
  • Lock knives and point and spring knives, with blades of any length;
  • Knives, including ceremonial knives, with a blade longer than 6 cm, of metal or other material strong enough to be used as a weapon;
  • Cleavers;
  • Machetes;
  • Razor razors and razor blades, excluding refill razor blades, and disposable razor blades, with encapsulated blades;
  • Sabers, swords and canes from stock;
  • Scalpels;
  • Scissors with blades longer than 6 cm;
  • Ski and walking pole;
  • Throwing rosettes (shurikens);
  • Sharp or sharp martial arts equipment.

4. Work Tools – Tools that can be used to cause serious injury or to threaten the safety of the aircraft, including:

  • Crowbars;
  • Drills and drill bits, including cordless portable electric drills;
  • Tools with a blade or rod longer than 6 cm that can be used as a weapon, such as screwdrivers and chisels;
  • Saws, including cordless portable power saws;
  • Torches;
  • Nail guns and nail guns;
  • Screwdrivers, screwdrivers or nuts;
  • Pliers.

5. Blunt objects – objects that can cause serious injury if used to physically harm someone, including:

  • Baseball and softball bats;
  • Clubs or clubs, rigid or flexible, including rattles, clubs, truncheons;
  • Cricket bats;
  • Golf clubs;
  • Hockey sticks;
  • lacrosse clubs;
  • Kayak and Canoe Paddles;
  • Skateboards;
  • billiard cues;
  • Fishing rods;
  • Martial arts equipment, including knuckles, bats, clubs, nunchakus, kubatons, kubasaunts;
  • Tennis rackets.

6. Explosives and flammable substances – objects that can or appear to be used to cause serious injury or to threaten the safety of the aircraft, including:

  • Ammunition;
  • Explosive cartridges;
  • Detonators and Fuzes;
  • Explosives and explosive devices;
  • Replicas or imitations of explosive material or devices;
  • Mines, grenades and other military explosives;
  • Grenade of all types;
  • Gases and gas containers, including butane, propane, acetylene, oxygen, in bulk;
  • Fireworks, torches of any kind and other fireworks, including poppers and fun fulminants;
  • Non-amorphous matches;
  • Lighters of any kind;
  • Smoke generators;
  • Flammable liquid fuels including gasoline, diesel, lighter fluid, alcohol,
  • Thanol;
  • Sprayable paints;
  • Turpentine and thinners;
  • Alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content greater than 70%.

7. Chemical and toxic substances

  • Acids and bases, including cells and batteries with a risk of spillage;
  • Corrosive or discoloring substances, including mercury, chlorine;
  • Neutralizing or incapacitating chemicals, gases and aerosols such as mace, pepper spray, tear gas, acid gas and animal repellent aerosols;
  • Radioactive materials such as medicinal or commercial isotopes;
  • Poison;
  • Infectious materials and hazardous biological agents, including contaminated blood, bacteria and viruses;
  • Materials susceptible to spontaneous ignition or combustion;
  • Fire extinguishers.

Note: These items must only be transported in your hold baggage. CVA assumes no responsibility for any item removed for safety reason.

Items that  are recommended to be carried in hand luggage

  • Electronic equipment: laptop, tablet, phone, electronic calendar, PlayStation, cd player, and similars;
  • Value documents: credit papers, bonds, commercial papers, etc;
  • Passports and other identification documents;
  • Cash, checks, credit cards, and similar;
  • Precious metals;
  • Articles of jewelry;
  • Medicines;
  • Fragile or perishable objects.

If your hand luggage has to be transported as checked luggage, we recommend you remove all valuable items and medication.

Cabo Verde Airlines is not liable for any loss or damage to the above-mentioned items, or a similar one if transported in your checked-in luggage.

Extra Hand Luggage

At the boarding gate, if the passenger has more than one hand baggage or its weight is more than the stipulated (08 Kg) that must be collected and tagged with EXTRA LUGGAGE tags to be collected charge and delivered to the passenger at the destination.

For extra HAND LUGGAGE, the following rates are applicable:

  • All destinations: 20euros per Kg
  • USA: 50usd per Kg

Liability limit of items carried in hand luggage

When hand luggage has to be carried as checked baggage, it is recommended to be removed all valuables and medications recommended to carry in hand baggage (see Items recommended to carry in hand luggage above).

Cabo Verde Airlines is not responsible for the loss or damage of similar objects carried in checked luggage.

It's the luggage transported in the hold. Each passenger, adult and child, is entitled to the following allowance:

Economy Light: 1 handbag (08kg) only

Economy Plus: 1 checked bags (23kg each) and 1 handbag (08 kg); 

Economy Flex: 2 checked bag (23kg) and 1 handbag (08 kg); 

Morabeza Light: 2 checked bags (23kg each) and and 1 handbag 10kg/22lbs; 

Morabeza Flex: 2 checked bags (23kg each) and 1 handbag 10kg/22lbs. 

 

And the hold baggage for domestic flights. Each passenger, adult and child, is entitled to the following allowance:

Social – includes 1 hold baggage (23kg) and 1 hand luggage (06kg);

Promo – includes 1 hold baggage (23kg) and 1 hand luggage (06kg);

Basic – includes 1 hold baggage (23kg) and 1 hand luggage (06kg);

Flex – includes 1 hold baggage (23kg) and 1 hand luggage (06kg);

Flex Plus – includes 1 hold baggage (30kg each) and 1 hand luggage (06kg);

Please be aware that the maximum allowed weight of one checked bag is 32kg / 70 lbs. Checked baggage which exceeds 32kg / 70lbs won’t be accepted. Please see the information about excess baggage fees.

Infants

Infant passengers are entitled to 1 checked bag weighing no more than 10kg/22 lbs with dimensions that don’t exceed 115 cm (55 cm length x 40 cm width x 20 cm height).

Note

When checking in your luggage, you will be issued a luggage identification tag, which you should keep until the end of your flight, after recovering your luggage.  CVA reserves the right to refuse any luggage or cargo that endangers the safety of the flight or that given its size, weight or nature is not suitable for transportation in the aircraft. Passengers should always inform the check-in agent of the contents of their luggage.

Depending on the Fare types, passengers are entitled to bring 1 handbag 08kg/17lbs or 1 handbag 10kg/22lbs (Morabeza Light and Morabeza Flex) and 1 or 2 checked bags (23kg each) with an exception of the Economy Light fare type in which only one handbag (08kg) is allowed. 

However, if passengers realize that they need additional baggage after they have purchased the ticket, they can buy an additional bag for a fee.

Save up to 10% by purchasing a bag at least 48h before the flight date and on our website under Manage Booking at Cabo Verde Airlines sales counter, travel agencies, or travel agents.

  • Until 48h before the flight date: 85€ (between Europe and Cabo Verde);
  • Less than 48h before the flight date: 100€ (between Europe and Cabo Verde).

Extra baggage fee for domestic flights:

  • Up to 48h before the flight date: 8200 CVE / 74.37€
  • Less than 48h before the flight date: 9200 CVE / 83.44€

Transporting some sports equipment is subject to prior authorization from Cabo Verde Airlines due to their weight, size or nature, and aircraft type. The booking of sports equipment has to be made at least 24 hours before departure.

Pre-reservation must be done and a Declaration of transport shall be filled and signed by the passenger here.

Bicycles
Bicycles should be disassembled and properly packed (metallic parts should not be exposed), with the handlebars in the direction of the frame and the pedals removed.

Due to security measures in the United States and the European Union, restrictions on carrying some liquids in hand luggage apply to all destinations operated by Cabo Verde Airlines.

Passengers are allowed to carry liquids in their cabin luggage only if in individual containers not exceeding 100 milliliters or equivalent (100g/30 Oz), packed in a sealed transparent plastic bag that can be opened and closed, up to a limit of 1 liter per passenger.

For reference, plastic bags cannot exceed 20cm x 20cm in dimension.

Liquids include, but are not limited to aerosols and gels: water and other beverages, syrup, soup, toothpaste, hair gel, perfume, shaving foams, and others of similar consistency, lotions, deodorant.

Exceptions

  • Liquid medication needed during the flight for medical purposes, accompanied by medical prescription, and subject to proof of authenticity
  • Liquids necessary for the entire flight to satisfy special dietary needs, with a medical report
  • Baby food needed during the flight
  • Liquids purchased in free shops at airports, as long as carried in transparent plastic bags, properly sealed and accompanied by the respective proof of purchase
  • Liquids purchased in-flight, as long as carried in transparent plastic bags, properly sealed and accompanied by the respective proof of purchase;

Passengers shall present separately the items covered by these exceptions at the hand luggage checkpoint. For further clarification, please check the Cape Verdean Civil Aviation Agency regulations Regulation nº3/2010 for liquids carrying in hand luggage and CV- CAR 12 for screening passengers and baggage before boarding.

When asked to do so, passengers will need to provide proof or prove the authenticity of the liquid exempted, through tasting or skin test.

The transport of your musical instrument is subject to prior authorization from Cabo Verde Airlines. It can be carried in the cabin or in the hold, depending on its weight, dimensions, nature and type of aircraft.

Check the conditions of carriage in the cabin and in the hold.

In the Cabin

To travel with the musical instrument at your side, in the aircraft cabin, you must book an extra seat that will accommodate the instrument.

The maximum weight allowed for transport in the cabin is 30kg / 66.13lbs. The maximum dimensions allowed are: 155x42x25 from the floor in the cabin or 110x42x50 on top of the seat.

To book the transport of your musical instruments in the cabin, you must contact our Call Center, at least 72 hours before the Flight. 

Under certain circumstances, in case of large musical instruments, it may be necessary to book more than one extra seat. For security reasons, this decision will be taken by Cabo Verde Airlines.

In the Hold

Check our recommendations to transport your musical instrument in the Hold

  • The passenger must properly pack the musical instrument for the trip;
  • The musical instruments can be included in the free baggage allowance as long as they are within the permitted weight and size limits;
  • The music instrument, already packed, must not exceed 45kg / 99lbs;
  • The maximum dimensions are 190 cm x 75 cm x 65 cm /75 in x 30 in x 26 in;
  • If your musical instrument exceeds the  dimensions and / or  the weight mentioned above, it must be transported as cargo;
  • The passenger must inform  the weight and measurements of the musical instrument when booking or at least until 24 hours before the flight, at a Cabo Verde Airlines available counter, at the travel agency or through the Call Center.
