Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States, is a compact city on the Potomac River, neighboring the states of Maryland and Virginia. It features imposing neoclassical monuments and buildings, such as those that serve as headquarters for the 3 federal powers: the Capitol, the White House and the Supreme Court. The city also houses iconic museums and performing arts centers such as the Kennedy Center.
The centerpiece is the National Mall, a green area that houses the Washington Monument and other memorials that celebrate wars and important American figures, such as Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. Also at the Mall are the Natural History Museum, the Air and Space and other museums of the Smithsonian Institute, with free admission, devoted to art, history and culture. Washington is a tree-lined, homely city with Victorian row houses and varied attractions, ranging from hip shopping in Dupont Circle to chic restaurants in Georgetown to the bustling nightlife of U Street Corridor.
